| How | King rigs, top water lures like Hopkins spoons and "Gotchas". |
| With What | Small live mullet, spot, and bluefish. Lures. |
| When | Early Spring and Late Fall are the best times. |
| Where | You can usually see them chasing schools of glass minnows. Watch for diving birds following boiling bait fish. If you cast a lure at them try to place the lure right in there path, right in front of them. They don't slow down much to turn for a bait. |
| Why | Fun to catch. An ultimate light tackle challenge on the pier or surf. They are edible but they have a dark red blood filled flesh. They require special cleaning which involves soaking the meat in fresh water. I have heard that if they are prepared just right they taste as good as tuna fish. I recently read that these fish make good sashimi but I do not know for sure. I also heard that you need a tuna permit to keep these fish. |
